Hi Guys, first post here though i've been around lurking for a couple of months.

i got a 420 convertible back in August and this week had a major roof leak...passenger side rear footwell was very wet and i could hear water splashing around under the back window near the rear speaker.

its back with BMW now but i wondered if anybody knew of this problem happening before that could point me in the direction of what to double check with them....as i worry they will simply not recreate the downpour we had at the weekend and just lube up the seals and tell me its ok.....which is fine until we get another downpour.

I used to work in a dealership and remember they did a smoke test once to see where the leak is. If you have a humidifier, having it run inside the car when you feel the need to do so can help in detecting them.

I have exactly the same problem. Took the car to BMW yesterday and they say there are drainage holes under the car that are blocked and want to charge me for the repair!!! Seems like they know there is a leak and instead of fixing it put in a poor workaround. Did your garage resolve it?

I would love to know what the outcome was?

The trouble with forums (for anything) is that people are quick to describe a problem but seldom return to tell and help anyone else what the solution proved to be!
My friend has just bought a 4 Series 2YO convertible hardtop with the identical symptoms and water dripping from under the car just forward of the left hand rear wheel arch and the sound of water sloshing around as you drive slowly.
Local main dealer wants £150 JUST to look with no advice as whether its a warranty matter or not. They surely must know, or could refer back to BMW for the information? Apparently there are four drain plugs underneath that could take 2 hours to clear. My feeling is that leaks are inevitable and to be expected with such a complex roof that anyway may have been put away wet and the real emphasis should be to ensure these one-way drain plugs which are there for water to escape should first be checked as the main culprit for the water build-up. You can expect blockage on an old car - inevitable caking-up with the dirt and grit of ages but not on a 2YO unless the plugs that have very sensitive apertures to allow water to drop out by gravity, but not come in, have got pinched for example or even only one of them.
For the moment my friend has to ask the selling garage (not BMW) what he has to do.

So, please, previous or other correspondents, what happened?

Hi,
I have just taken my 2yo f33 to the dealer withe the same problem and they cleared the drains under warranty. The water took 20m to drain. I suspect that the rear window seals are at fault and are allowing the compartment underneath to fill with water.

Hi
I have the same problem with a 2016 420 cabrio. It is going into the garage next week, should be interesting to hear what they say. I also have water leaking from the front of the rear left hand side wheel arch.

I discovered a similar fault with my 430d last night. I bought the car in June and I believe the warranty has just expired as its on a 2015 plate. My problem is slightly different however, as I have got water dripping down from the roof on the drivers side, particularly when i brake hard.

Has anyone experience anything similar?

I’ve also had the problem with the roof leaking when breaking hard or cornering. The car has been into bmw twice and had the roof seals replaced twice, the leak has actually got worse. It’s with bmw again at the moment, I’ll let you know if we get any solution.

Hi guys

I had this problem with my 428i (2014) about 3 years ago. The well above the wheel arch filled with water and fried the amplified. I took it to BMW who replaced the rear wing and the amplifier for £150.

I have just bought an M4 convertible (2016) and discovered a leak that drips on my Right sleeve whilst driving. I called BMW assist who are coming to collect the vehicle and will inspect it (and hopefully fix it).

I bought 420d convertible hard top from dealership 2 months ago and noticed a slight leak from the rear of drivers side. Car is still under warranty and seals have been changed. I was asked to pick car up after 3 weeks from BMW and I immediately noticed water leak from 3 places now instead of one that was very minor.Instead of fixing it they made it worse and handed it back to me which is so frustrating and I have lost my trust on them. I took the car back for them to fix it. Called BMW customer service as well who will look into this matter.

Is this job really tricky to get it right ? Shall I demand to return the car to the dealership?

Hi, I have got the same problem I have a 2018 435 Convertible with water ingress to the boot area, I returned my car under warranty to be told that the drain holes in the boot were the wrong diameter causing a blockage these would be enlarged which should cure the problem, it would appear to be a common problem.

I returned the car to the BMW dealership two months later with the same problem, ingress of water to the boot, they replaced the boot seal under warranty.

Two weeks later I still have the same problem, I have returned the car once again for the same problem water ingress in the boot, I received a phone call from the dealer telling me that they did not know how the water was getting into the boot, they still have my car.

Hi Tomadma, I'm having the identical water damage problem inside the rear panel on my 420d as you had with your 428i. But both the dealer or BMW HQ won't accept any responsibility for damage caused by their design that blocks the drain plug and the BMW Extended Warranty will also not pay out for water damage to the window regulators either.
Can I ask if your car was fixed under warranty... or did they accept there was a problem and do a deal with you for £150?
I'm being asked to pay full whack & it's a lot when I thought at the very least I had a warranty!!

I’ve got the exact same problem in my 440. Been to the bmw dealer 6 times now they have replaced at least 3 of the roof seals to no avail. Did yours get sorted and can you tell me what fixed the problem?

Did this get fixed? I have exactly the same issue in my 440 and BMW have had it back at least 5 times. Would like to know what is needed to get it done elsewhere. Thanks.

I have just discovered this problem on my 2015 435d. I took it my local trusted garage yesterday. They drained the water that had collected in the rear passenger side panel. According to the mechanic who investigated the issue the cause is an ill-fitting window seal at the base of the rear window where it joins the passenger door window. I inspected it this morning and compared it to the driver's side and I can see that these sections of the window seal don't match. The garage recommended that the solution would be to get glass replacement company to remove the window and apply a new seal. The garage also recommned that I check my insurance policy as the glass cover is not necessarily limited to the windscreen. Given the comments already made I am reluctant to take it to BMW! Any thoughts?
