If this happens I just hope build quality and everything stays the same. I'd still prefer engine production in Germany.

BMW is considering the possibility of building engines in the U.S. or Mexico.

If the German luxury automaker decides to do that, it would mark a major change for the company. It kept engine manufacturing in Europe until last year when four-cylinder engine production began in China to supply the company’s assembly plants there.

A new report by Bloomberg citing unnamed sources suggests the company is mulling the possibility of building powerplants in North America. BMW might reach a decision about the project in 2014, although details beyond that are unclear.

BMW currently operates one manufacturing facility in Spartanburg, S.C. where it builds the X3, X5 and X6 for domestic sale and export.

As the European auto market continues to suffer, all the three German luxury brands are taking advantage of North American production advantages. Each of the three brands are enjoying sales growth in the U.S.
