BMW is reportedly moving ahead with plans to modify its current naming structure, starting with the next-generation 1 Series. That car will be front-drive only, while what we currently know as the 1 Series (the Coupe and Convertible) will be rebadged as 2 Series models. But that’s not all.
Starting with the next-generation 3 Series, the two-door models will instead wear 4 Series badges. This new badge strategy is already in place in BMW’s upper range of models with the 5 Series sedans, the 6 Series coupe and convertible and the 7 Series sedan.
There will, however, be one exception: BMW’s M division. While we wondered what would become of the M3′s fate when this new first emerged several weeks back, the latest info suggests the current M naming strategy will stick around. This makes sense from a certain branding perspective, but it also seems idiotic by another, with the M-tuned 4 Series being called the M3. Strange.
