Can a stolen key be disabled?

The local dealer, not the one I originally bought from, claims I'll need a major computer replacement.

Some Google-ing makes me think keys can be disabled but given different models and years I was hoping for a confirmation here.

Thanks BMW assist. They pinpointed my stolen car within minutes and the police retrieved it. The only damage was that the mirror was removed, probably because that's where a lot of cars have their tracking systems.
Police said they'll probably try to steal it again since they have a key so I want that key disabled

I realize I'll have to change the physical door locks.
