how to improve cornering ability on 435i or 435i xdrive

Hi all,

I just ordered a 435i xdrive but later found out its cornering ability is a bit disappointing, its pulling 0.88g vs other vehicle in this class or below is puling over 0.9g (i.e. Audi S5 is pulling 0.95g). Does any one here has any suggestion on how to improve cornering ability on this car? I am not too familiar with any after market options and would love to learn from all of you. Thanks you in advance

@hello welcome to the forum

how much would you be looking to spend when going for aftermarket suspension components?

the FASTEST way is to ditch your run flats and go for much stickier rubber. Or the most cost effective solution, stop measuring your dick in bars. The S5 is more comparable with the M4, not your 435. Besides, can you tell me where your .2 desired improvement on the skidpad will factor into real world enjoyment?

Thank you @MPWR and @bird. S5 is usually compared to 435i. RS5 is compared to M4. C&D also compared S5 with 435i (http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...omparison-test).

I am looking to spend less than $5K. In terms of tires, BMW is already using a highly rated Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT. How much additional improvement can I get from tire alone by switching to another high performance tire? Also, would tire improve the skidpad numbers?

Thank you again!

Your question is dependent on which suspension and wheels/tires you have on your car. We have the 435i xDrive with the M electronic suspension and brakes.

If you have the electronic suspension, Dinan now has a download upgrade that stiffens the suspension even more to increase handling. First impressions on it show a noticeable increase in cornering/handling. Might want to check it out at dinancars.com. Replacing the run-flats with a more performance driven tread and taller lightweight wheels with lower profile tires will also make a noticeable difference. Lowering the unsprung weight and adding a softer compound will make it more agile and responsive.

If you DON'T have the M electronic suspension, first, shame on you for not checking the box if you were looking the best cornering available for the 435. :-) Second, you can look at complete suspension upgrades from multiple companies, including Dinan to meet your goals. Just be cautious of the warranty coverage and discuss your plans with your dealer for their input.

With around $5K for budget this shouldn't be a problem, especially if you can do the work yourself.

You are correct that the S5 is the comparable model to the 435 with the RS5 being the M4 "match". The problem with the comparisons is that they usually don't have the M electronic suspension on the 435, which in my opinion isn't a comparison if they are trying to point out better handling characteristics without having the best options on the 435 if that was a bullet point when doing the comparison.

Hope this helps.

2015 435i coupe. I have installed most of the Dinan suspension mods - springs, sway bars, bump stops and Shockware. Also Michelin PSS. The Dinan mods have made a huge difference in the cornering performance of this car: way reduced body roll, better turn in. They weren't cheap, but I'm very happy I had them done. (I'll probably also get the monoball kit to replace the thrust arm bushings.) This is now simply a very competent car. Ride is a little harsher, but for me that's a small price to pay for the improved cornering.
