BMW Owner's Guide to Winter Car Maintenance
The winter is coming, and that means that we will all soon be driving in winter conditions. BMW offers some advice on how to keep up with the maintenance of your vehicle during this cold time of year.
The most basic thing you can do is make sure you make all your regular checks on time and that your car has the correct oil level, the coolant has the proper concentration, check the lights and the battery.
In the winter, oil gets thicker and harder to move around inside the engine block. The car will consequently need more power to start up around this time of year, and the batter will be taking on the brunt of that extra effort.
With the battery losing more power, the alternator will be working overtime this time around and might throw fits at you. Add to this your use of seat warmer, steering wheel warmers, windshield and rear window defrosters, all of which take up more current the usually, straining the alternator even more.
After checking the alternator, you should also check the windshield wipers, as snow and rain are more intense during the winter.
Freezing doors and windows are not fun. Apply glycerin to the locks and around the seals and hinges to prevent freezing.
Since BMWs have rear-wheel-drive transmission (except xDrive models) you should definitely consider winter tires. The DSC will try to keep you on track even with summer tires but you'd put your life and the others' lives in danger every time you go on the road if you do not switch to proper rubbers. Even if you have an xDrive vehicle, you should still probably get winter tires.
Lastly, check the heating/climate control. You don't want to freeze in your car.
I'm sure that none of this comes as too much of a surprise, but its nice to have a reminder as, like I said to begin this, the winter is coming.
