Angry Total electrical failure

Ive only had my 420i M Sport for 10 months and the car has suffered total electrical failure, first it reported an issue with the windscreen wipers and then the drive train before just failing completely. No life at all

It has been with the dealer for two weeks now and they have raised a PUMA case with BMW who has also sent their own people to look at the problem. They have said the front electronic module blew but do not know why, it is being replaced today. They have warned me that it could go again until they find the root cause and they may have my car for many more weeks.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Thanks

Ian

Have they been able to resolve the issue yet?

I have a 428i M sport, july 2014 build, that I decided to have my dealer retrofit trailer hook and reverse camera (original retrofit kits from BMW). When they had connected everything and was going to program it the car did not respond as it should. Puma suggested that the front electronic module needed to be replaced. After a week the new FEM arrived and they changed it. It was still not possible to communicate with ECU, DSC and ICM. After a week Puma suggested that the ICM should be changed. Another week went and the new module arrived but still not possible to communicate with either the new ICM, nor the other units.

The car has been at the dealer for 6 weeks now.

Something strange is that the wiring diagram showing up on the diagnose computer when they connect to it does not match what actually is in the car.

Thanks

Leif

I can't help you with it but is BMW at least covering the cost of these extra parts?

Yes had the same problem with my 2016 420 M Sport. FEM failed and killed everything on the car (Which only had 800 miles on the clock). Broke down in the middle of the road and as its an auto could not get it into neutral so totally stuck. Also could not open the doors or put the hazard lights on. Very dangerous in my opinion. BMW replaced and it has been OK so far but for sure a problem on these cars.

You should still have your warranties in play if it's within the first year that you spotted all these issues. Really sorry to hear that all of this is putting your cars out of action but hopefully they'll get things rectified as soon as possible. It doesn't seem very like the brand to end up having such big issues with their cars though.

Warranty better be covering every single part of this. That's horrible ! Too late for that lemon law too I suppose. But I heard if they have it for over a month or something you can pull that law ?

Usually as long as its nothing you as an owner can cause and they have no grounds for saying that then you're in the clear. But going to a good dealer is where someone should starts. The good dealers wants you to be a repeat customer so they'll make sure issues like this are handled well.
